Restoring Brilliance, Preserving Tradition: Renovation of Historical Chandeliers
As manufacturers of crystal chandeliers, we’ve repeatedly encountered cases where once-magnificent historical lighting fixtures in locations such as castles, palaces, and churches have lost their original beauty and brilliance. While these fixtures often remain functional, their aesthetic condition deteriorates over time due to dust, aging, and wear. Based on these experiences, we have extended our services to include lighting restoration and refurbishment, combining our expert craftsmanship with a deep respect for the historical significance of these unique pieces.
Preserving Historical Value, Restoring Original Shine
Our mission is to restore the original elegance of these fixtures without compromising their authentic character. The renovation process draws from our deep expertise in high-quality lighting production and our understanding of the historical context.
What does restoration involve?
Historical chandelier restoration is a meticulous process that includes:
- Careful dismantling and transportation of the fixtures to our workshop
- Cleaning and polishing crystal trimmings and glass parts with the utmost care to preserve their clarity and shine
- Structural refurbishment, including replacement of missing components
- Surface treatment of metal elements, such as polishing or patination, in line with the original style
- Updating electrical wiring to meet modern safety standards without compromising period-accurate aesthetics
Case Study: Restoration of Lighting Fixtures in the Church of St. James the Greater in Železný Brod
As part of one of our significant projects, we participated in the restoration of lighting fixtures in the Church of St. James the Greater in Železný Brod. The work involved a central crystal chandelier measuring approximately 1.5 × 2 meters, along with two three-armed wall lights. The entire project began with professional dismantling, followed by the careful transport of all components to our workshop facilities.
There, we carried out a complete cleaning and meticulous polishing of all glass and crystal trimmings. Missing parts were carefully replaced to match the original appearance and materials. The metal components underwent new surface treatments — depending on their condition, we chose either polishing or gentle patination to achieve the most authentic result. The restoration also included rewiring the electrical system, which we carried out with a strong emphasis on both safety and aesthetics, while staying true to the period style of the fixtures.
The result was a set of fully functional and historically faithful lighting pieces that once again brought light to the church interior and restored its original spirit and atmosphere. The entire restoration process can be seen in the photographs accompanying this article.
